Seven Things That Make Me Happy

I love getting new magazines in the mail and flipping to their "Our Favorites" page. Whether it is a page of handy products from Rachel Ray, or smart ways to organize from Martha Stewart, or happiness producing knick knacks from the geniuses at Domino, I am always inspired. And, can't we all use a little inspiration and hope these days? Here is my attempt to be a magazine writer.

    1) C.O. Bigelow Vitamin Mentha Vintage Rouge Mint Tinted Lip Balm. - My future sister-in law, Rachel, gave it to me for Christmas and I just love it. The color is very complimentary and leaves the lips with a very tingly, fresh minty feeling. I don't leave the house without it.

    2) Starbucks London Fog Tea Latte - Yes, it sounds like shameless advertising, but I do love it. The LFTL is made with love by your local baristas and consists of loose leaf Earl Grey tea bags steeped in your choice of steamed milk and lightly sweetened with vanilla. The drink warms the very cockles of your soul as you curl up with a large mug and that novel you have been intending to conquer.

    3) Vintage Luggage - My room is full of vintage pieces, collected from resale shops and basements of relatives. Very chic for use as decorations, hidden storage, or even as functional and unexpected end tables.

    4) Remote Start - I can't remember what winter was like before I had this feature on my car, but I remember it being cold. Very cold. Even on days that I leave the house at 4:30, I just open the door a few minutes before I depart and point my keys the direction of the car. When I leave, the car is already toasty warm and the radio playing my favorites.

    5) Black and White Photography - I realize that colors are now "in" again, but I love the classic simplicity of black and white. Every picture in my room is a black and white snapshot of a moment in time, an architectural element or of someone I love. From a design perspective, I think every room should have something black or white. Even if it is as small as piping on a pillow or a candle, those colors (or lack therof) bring completeness to the big picture.

    6) Franklin Covey Planner - As I have confessed before, I am an imperfect perfectionist, and as much as I would love to stay on top of it all in my head, it just doesn't work that way. I have tried a lot of systems, but always end up back with Franklin. This time around I purchased the Phoebe binder, with a black and white vinyl cover so it easily hides dirt (and coffee) making it perfect for executives in and out of the home. My inserts this year are from the "Passport" Collection and feature gorgeous pictures of all the great wonders of the world. That way, every day I can live vicariously through my planner pages. Not as exciting as actually traveling, but definitely cheaper.

    7) Mint.com - Probably my least favorite aspect of life is managing my money. It confuses and frustrates me every time I try to pay attention, so I generally don't. That is why I love mint.com. It is free and easy to sign up. All you do is assign a budget for different categories (groceries, gas, home, personal care, etc) and it tracks the spending for you. With the click of a few buttons it will bring up a pie chart of your expenses or charts your habits. It will even send you emails if you go over budget in an area (coffee shops, for example). It has saved me in so many ways. I love it.

  • "I am helped..."

Yesterday and today have been two of those kind of days. The kind that reek of despair and frustration. The kind in which nothing goes according to plan. My list of people and things on my bad list is rather huge (federal government, Starbucks, my bank, the state government, the insurance people, the attic insulation people, whoever decided it was okay for the insulation people to come today, the dogs, the city government, the Time Warner cable people, etc.)

Each of the above situations involves me doing something, answering something, paying for something, deciding something, or changing something that was not on my agenda or grand scheme for life.

Then, I remembered, it has never been about me or my agenda. God cares very little about how much I owe or am owed, His heart lies where mine should be, concerned about the content of my character.

"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped; therefor my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise Him." (Psalm 28 7)

I was not at a point of rejoicing because God wasn't my shield. I was attempting to be my own shield, thwarting life's trials with the equivalent of a measly plastic toy. He desperately wants to be my helper, if I will but let Him. My heart cries to rejoice in Him, but I cannot; and I suspect you cannot either, without giving everything back to Christ. He is a much better problem solver than I can ever pretend to be.

  • I am back!

After a hiatus of a little over a year, and thanks to a little prodding and assistance from my sister, the site is back up and running. What musings will be typed out for the world to read definitely remains to be seen, most likely a lot of Starbucks stories, house renovation grumblings, and not a few challenges to go and change the world.

    Blessings!

    Memoirs of my week

Last week was spent in Florida. Warm, sunny, relaxing Florida. It was tons of fun to meet up with an old friend of mine for dinner at Gloria Estefan's vintage Cuban restaurant, to tour the multi-million dollar model homes at a retirement village someone was trying to recruit my parents to move into (!), and to attend the fairy tale wedding of a Xanga friend...it was all sublime.

I sit here, unpacking my bags, shaking off that distinct "I have been hanging in a hotel closet" scent from my shirts, and wishing I were packing again. I so love travel, but really do not want to travel for a living...I think working while traveling would take some of the fun out. Of course, I thought that about working for Starbucks and I still love it.

I was thinking about influence this week, particularly in how I influence my employees to do their job well. Being in the Sunshine State made me think about the life of Walt Disney. The man was such a genius. He took a simple cartoon drawing of a rodent and turned it into a multi-billion dollar corporation that brings magic into untold numbers of lives each year. Did you know that the sun never sets on a Disney theme park? Did you know that the employees are trained to greet each person they see--fellow cast member or guest? Did you know that at the Magic Kingdom, there is 27 feet between each trash can--the scientifically proven distance a person will carry a piece of garbage before setting it down. I mean really? Who cares about this stuff? The execs at Disney do apparantly and it makes all the difference.

Wow. Just think about it from a Christian perspective. What if more people worldwide recognized the cross than the mouse ears? Walt Disney changed Florida, America, and the world by having a vision for creating happy moments for families. What can I do? What can you do?

  • Happy New Year!

Yes. It has been awhile. Between the weddings of friends, more travels, and changes at work, my life has consisted of running to the next thing.

But, beginning tomorrow, I resolve to work no more than 40 hours a week, sleep at least six hours a night and write a blog post a week, if for no reason, but for my own records and remembrances.

Blessings upon you as your 2008 gets off the ground.
